Entrusted to me – can’t refuse it.  It’s a gift and I choose it.
But it is up to me to use it.  I must suffer if I lose it.  Give account if I abuse it.
Just a tiny minute….But eternity is in it!

Just Say “No!”

By | Newsletter, Temple Christian School

I recently read an article about a Hollywood celebrity couple who, because of the tenants of their Scientology religion, will  never tell their daughter “no.”  Really?  Never?

Unfortunately, this isn’t just happening in Hollywood. There are many permissive mothers and fathers that are too tired after a hard day of work, or too concerned about having their children “like them” to stand their ground.  We’ve swung from an old Victorian extreme (Children are to be seen and not heard), to a new, more politically correct extreme (Children are to be catered to, lest their fragile egos become damaged.)  In fact, most books on child-rearing today recommend various ways of distracting, bargaining, and/or reasoning with children –ANYTHING to avoid saying, “No.”

Sadly, these parents aren’t doing themselves, their children, or society as a whole, any favors.  Their selfish, demanding toddlers are going to grow into selfish, demanding teenagers, and eventually, into selfish, demanding adults.

Betsy Hart in her book, It Takes a Parent, suggests that it is the duty of EVERY parent to persevere.  What we do as parents is a reflection of our character.  She states, “If we persevere in planting good virtues in our children – and we do that be being their parents, not their friends – we won’t have to worry so much about how they will behave under pressure.”

Having the backbone to say “no” when appropriate is also a good way to save our children from the “anything goes” culture that surrounds us.  Many of today’s parents seem to enthrone their children and constantly enforce the idea that the world revolves around them.  Children need us to guide and direct them from a position of authority.  Our child need us to be their parents – not their peers.

Has America Changed?

By | Newsletter, Pastor Surbaugh Articles

America was a great nation because it was founded on Godly principles.  John Adams once stated, “The general principles of which the fathers achieved independence were the general principles of Christianity.  I will avow that I then believed and now believe that those general principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God.”

I believe John Adams would tell us today that you cannot separate God from America and expect America to be great.  Has America changed?  You bet it has.  In the eyes of the world we are still wealthy, strong, and viewed as a super-power.  But the truth of the matter is that America is no longer the nation that it was.  (This is not my father’s America!)  We have lost our greatness by turning our backs on the God of our fathers.

Perilous Times

By | Newsletter, Pastor Surbaugh Articles

It has been little over a decade since the 21st century arrived, and as the calendar moves on in 2011, many ask if ruin is on the horizon.  We now live in a very secular and religiously antagonistic 21st century.  It is quite clear that the three institutions God placed on earth, the home, governments, and the church, are all under siege.

There was a time in our history that the Sunday sermon was the chief source of community instruction.  The Bible was the heart of shaping minds and determining judgments.  Not so in 2011!  The assault of information that now competes for our attention on a daily basis is overwhelming.

We are the target 24/7 of an often deadly and nonstop amount of media input.  Media influence via the press, television, radio, the printed page and internet has caused many to change their beliefs.  (This is not my father’s world!)  This is illustrated by the public opinion shift in the past decade on such subjects as long-term marriage, sodomy, abortion, authority, integrity, capital punishment, how to rear children, and even “how to do church.”

According to reports, super cialis cheap the Gainesville mayor was booked at Alachua County Jail on a charge of property damage. Your first step in curing yourself uk cialis of an erectile dysfunction is not an easy task, and no one notices anything. The outcome is that all these divine institutions are progressively weakened and their roles are in many instances being dictated by the “rulers of darkness of this world.”  Not a single divine institution from the home, governments, and the church has remained unscathed.

Ironically, due to everyone’s doing what is right in his own sight, we have produced a generation of young Christians who know next to nothing about their own faith except how they feel about it.  They have deep beliefs about certain cultural issues, but do not know why they obey Scripture, the essentials of doctrine, or the experience of church fellowship.  There has been a failure to pass on to our children a vital fundamental confidence in the Word of God and the importance of doctrinal faith.

Missions Moments – March/April 2011

By | Missions, Newsletter

The Ashcrafts are our missionaries to Southeast Asia.  Randy, Gwen, and their children (Lee, Cynthia, Andrew, Caleb and William) arrived in Bangkok on April 14, 2010.  They have mastered enough of the language to make basic conversation with the Thai people.  Randy teaches English three times a week to Thai Buddhists and offers a Bible lesson following each class.  Their plans for 2011 are to keep learning Thai, keep teaching English, and share Christ with the lost at every opportunity.

Their Type-O visa will expire on March 27.  They have applied for a work permit but it has not been received.  If their work permit is not granted by the deadline, the Ashcraft family will get a tourist visa which will require them to exit and re-enter the country every fourteen (14) days.  This not will be easy logistically and will be very expensive.  Randy and Gwen have asked that we be in prayer that they soon receive their work visas.

Take Pride in Temple – April 9th.

Mark your calendars for April 9th.  This is our fourth annual Take Pride in Temple Day.  This is a great opportunity for the entire body to come together and make our church look its best.  We need men to help clear banks, weed eat, and clear brush.  We also need workers to paint, and clean both inside and out.  This works best when everyone participates, so make plans now to attend.  We will work from 8:00 A.M-noon. Lunch is provided afterwards.

Another big event is coming up in April.  That is our Faith Promise Mission’s Month.  We all have the opportunity to be involved with sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ all around the world.  We can pray for our missionaries and we can give to support their work.  Our missionaries faithfully sacrifice so much on the front lines of ministry.  The least we can do is sacrifice a little here at home so that the work can go forward.  As Christian Americans we live so much better than the rest of the world.  Pray about what you can do to sacrificially give to Faith Promise Missions this year.  You will be blessed as a result of this both now and for all of eternity.  One day in heaven, you will meet souls who came to Christ because of your faithfulness in giving.  You will be given a number of opportunities this year to become more involved and acquainted with our missionaries.  Take advantage of these opportunities so you can see how God is working in the lives of our missionaries and their ministries.

Food for Thought – March/April 2011

We are definitely living in perilous times. As the evil in this world waxes worse and worse, what are we to do to cope with the increasingly difficult circumstances we face from day to day?  God tells us in verses 9-12 of Ecclesiastes chapter 4, that two are better than one because they have a good reward for their labor. If one falls, his companion will lift him up and they will be able to prevail against their enemies. He also says that a cord of three strands is not quickly broken. The unified effort of Christian brothers and sisters is not only the best defense in perilous times, it’s an effective offense as well.

In times like these, we need each other.
In times like these, sisters and brothers;
Be very sure, each one’s secure,
And help each other grip the Solid Rock.

When the death angel visits; when the boss says, “no work”; when your spouse says, “I’m leaving” and your life’s filled with hurt; when the Dr. says “cancer”, or if your children rebel; when your best friend betrays you or temptations knock you down………. In times like these, we need each other. In times like these, sisters and brothers; be very sure, each one’s secure, and help each other grip the Solid Rock.

Proverbs 27:17 says, “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”  Galatians 6:1-2 tells us “Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, restore such a one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ”

One strand alone, when it’s put to the test and stretched to the limit finds it hard to resist the pressures of life that always exist; God says two strands are stronger, but three strands are best.  When the Holy Spirit of God brings together a family of faith, He provides the power as they battle the forces of evil. Just as Aaron and Hur held up the hand of Moses bearing the rod of God in Israel’s first battle/victory against the Amalekites, we must lift each other up if we are going to prevail in these perilous times.

Awana – March/April 2011

It is difficult to believe, but January was the half-way point for the 2010/2011 AWANA year. The weeks are flying by! If you have been considering joining one of  our clubs, either as a clubber or as a leader, there is no better time than the present. We have had as many as 75 clubbers in one night, with over 15 visitors this year. We just celebrated Christmas with a birthday party for Jesus on December 20th. Jesus is truly the Reason for the season, which was our focus with the clubbers. “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.” (2 Timothy 3:1)

Again and again over the past two millennia, our world has experienced stretches of relative peace and prosperity, interrupted at intervals by terrible times of agony and catastrophe.  And Paul wants us to know that these times of stress will be accompanied by false teachers, and we need to be careful not to be misled by them.

The study authors discussed several online viagra sales loved that possibilities mentioned below. He describes them as “having a form of godliness but denying its power.”  In other words, Paul tells us that the primary cause of these repetitive cycles of stress and danger is the hypocritical lives of people who profess to be Christians.  They outwardly seem pious but inwardly do not have the power of God in their lives.

Hypocritical Christianity is the reason for these recurring cycles of upheaval.  God tells us throughout  the New Testament that the church is the most important body in the world.  And when the church ceases to be what God has commanded it to be, the world suffers.  “Ye are the salt of the earth,” Jesus tells us. “But if the salt have lost his savour … it is good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.”  When Christians lose their saltiness, the whole world suffers.  “You are the light of the world,” the Lord says (Matthew 5:14).  When our light dims, the whole world sinks deeper into darkness.
